Practices to pause, breathe, listen, and intentionally act.

About My Practice: Kate Skaggs (she/her and they/them) - A curiosity of exploring inner and outer landscapes during a time of heartbreak and life uncertainty gently pulled me into practicing yoga 14 years ago. The practices of movement and intentional breath offered a small refuge in the day to slow down, be more deliberate about where I focus my attention, and heal. I have been searching for words to describe this journey but none seem adequate. And that has been the point of finding Yoga School (2018 - 2019) with the Bhakti Yoga Movement Center in Portland, OR (currently virtual). My teachers here include Lisa Mae Osborn, Monicka Koneski, and Danielle Hanna. Listening to and learning from my dear classmates and teachers was such a special experience that I’m eternally grateful for. With them, I learned more of a language that we’re intentionally not taught, revealing a way to explore unexamined inner landscapes and how that exploration can help uproot a bit of suffering in the world at the collective level, by starting close-in. Other teachers that played formative roles in my yoga practice are: John Schumacher (student of B.K.S. Iygenar) and Mary Kay Connection (Sivanada Yoga Lineage).
I am actively, humbly, trying to dismantle my implicit biases but know that I will make mistakes; accountability and integrity matter to me and I am working to grow those skills when the impact of my words or actions cause harm. Applying yoga philosophy to life of the mat is what I hope to hold space for others to explore through asana, pranayama, and subtle practices. Acknowledging and sending gratitude to my teachers and their teachers, down the long and diverse lineages of yoga to the source traditions of these transformational healing practices in South Asia.
